Rebel with a pun

Belgium-based designer label Caroline Bosmans represents the pinnacle of avant-garde kids wear, sharp and surreal, yet never losing sight of humor. We designed a brand identity that represents this edge in Caroline’s couture: A spiked layer of assertiveness playfully encouraging children not always to conform to expectation, and poke fun at conventions.

Business in the front

Facing the challenge of potentially alienating a luxury fashion clientele a bespoke variable display font aptly named ‘Bossans’ was designed. Extracting a layer of ‘protective spikes’ to varying degrees, this typeface is a poignant visual metaphor for non-conformity and a rebellious spirit. All business in the front, and party in the back.

Bossans

Designed from the ground up but inspired by Helvetica Neue, the typeface is the brand’s main asset for distinguishing itself among ‘blanded’ institutions in the realm of fashion and couture. Adjusting the family’s weight infects its mood or character, ranging from smooth all the way to spiked when expressive representation of the brand identity is required.

Bearing the aesthetic of a game character, brand avatar Shelly became Caroline Bosmans’s icon and mascot. This candy coloured lips-slash-oyster hybrid that exists mainly in the digital world can also be encountered in the flesh/shell as print or accessory.
