Turning fifty never looked this good

Film Fest Gent, Belgium’s largest film festival, was completely rebranded in honour of its milestone jubilee anniversary. The new identity was officially unveiled during the opening of the 50th edition of the Film Festival: We designed a brand new identity with a bold logo, striking colours, dynamic animation and a sprightly icon.

The Film Fest Gent rebranding was awarded with a Graphite Pencil at the 2024 D&AD Awards. Featuring a distinctive thematic pattern that will evolve annually, the branding is designed to maintain a dynamic and engaging aesthetic. This prestigious accolade underscores the exceptional creativity and innovation behind the rebranding effort, showcasing its success in a highly competitive field.

The reel

The new word mark references both the inherent rotation associated with ‘moving images’ and the circular shape of Joseph Plateau’s Phenakistiscope: A nod to the rich heritage festival, and homage to its spiritual patron. Both the still and animated version of the contemporary ‘reel’ design set an expressively dynamic tone, evoking the festive atmosphere of a true festival.

Rotating and radiating

Each edition, before receiving any material from the competing movies, three main colorways are defined for initial communication. The palette is then extended by sampling from the richness of all movie poster imagery once contesters were announced. This radiant use of color can be felt throughout the communication, and resonates in a world far beyond dark cinema halls.

“That our new visual identity so powerfully embraces, depicts and literally sets everything we stand for in motion is something we are very happy about.”
